O'Neil was a student at high school when she auditioned in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. The judges loved her voice and she made it into the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was praised by the judges. She was however a complete loser in the top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. Judges were horrified by this and proclaimed to the public they believed that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she didn't even make it to the third place again. With two other stunning performance on September 7 2005, as O'Neil as well as Rex Goudie advanced to the competition's final two contestants, the judge Werner said that headlines in the morning papers were going to read O'Neil beat Goudie in order to be the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the youngest winner of the show's record .
